The Queen grants town status to Wrexham and Douglas along with six other towns

Wrexham and Douglas are among eight UK towns that have been granted city status as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Alongside towns in Welsh and the Isle of Man, Bangor in Northern Ireland has also been named a town, as have Colchester in Essex, Doncaster in Yorkshire and Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire in England. In Scotland, Dunfermline is now a town.

Meanwhile, the capital of the Falklands Islands, Stanley, also gained status. Stanley and Douglas’ move from town to town is the first time a location in an Overseas Territory or Crown Dependency has received this honor.

The granting of city status to the eight cities is part of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee commemorations. Similar steps were taken in previous jubilees.

Speaking of the granted city statuses, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Steve Barclay said the places “make Britain great”. The Tory MP said: “What was clear to me during the process of assessing each nomination was the pride people felt in their communities, local cultural heritage and the Royal Family.

“As we celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s colossal contribution to society, I am delighted that we are able to recognize some of the many places that make Britain great. It also incredibly reflects Her Majesty’s global vision. Majesty and Years of International Service nominees from the Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies were selected as recipients for the first time.”

The granting of city status was greeted with enthusiasm and joy in all the places that received it. Alfred Cannan, Isle of Man Chief Minister, said: ‘Douglas to be named one of eight winners of city status and leading the way into the Crown Dependencies is a huge honor for the island and celebrates our unique blend of culture, history and heritage.

“This honor is a wonderful way to mark our relationship with Her Majesty The Queen, our Lord of Mann, while celebrating the Platinum Jubilee.”

Welsh Secretary Simon Hart has welcomed the announcement that Wrexham has been granted town status. He said: “Wrexham has a wonderful history and an exciting future and I’m absolutely delighted to see it has been awarded city status as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

“Wrexham already has much to be proud of and I hope township status will bring further recognition for all that the community has to offer and bring new opportunities for Wrexham to prosper and grow.”
