LONDON (Reuters) – West Ham United surprised Premier League leaders Chelsea with a 3-2 victory on Saturday after coming back twice from behind and then claiming all three points with a bizarre late goal from substitute defender Arthur Masuaku.
The Hammers took the win in the 87th minute when Masuaku surprised Edouard Mendy with what looked like a cross, but the ball flew into the near corner for the Congolese full-back’s first goal in his 96th Premier appearance. League.
“It was very lucky the goal, let’s face it. Honestly, I don’t think we played so well today, but we scored the goals,” West Ham manager David Moyes told BT (LON 🙂 Sport.
Chelsea seemed in control of the game after 28 minutes when Thiago Silva scored with a header from a Mason Mount corner that West Ham keeper Lukasz Fabianski was only able to touch on a post before he entered .
Moments later, the 37-year-old Brazilian saved Chelsea on the other side by repelling Vladimir Coufal’s shot into the goal.
But the European champions offered the hosts a comeback in the 40th minute when Jorginho put his goalkeeper Edouard Mendy under pressure with a back pass.
Mendy knocked down Jarrod Bowen for a penalty converted by Manuel Lanzini.
It took only four minutes for Chelsea to regain the lead when Mount, returning to his best after an absence due to wisdom teeth issues, hung on to a long pass from Hakim Ziyech for a volley perfect which surprised Fabianski at his near post.
Chelsea called on Romelu Lukaku early in the second half to replace limp Kai Havertz, giving the Belgian striker much needed minutes in his quest to get back into shape after an injury.
But West Ham equalized again in the 56th minute when Bowen shot hard and low from the edge of the box.
As both teams searched for a winner, Bowen was unable to convert a Michail Antonio cross in the 75th minute as a Jorginho shot was deflected past the surprise winner Masuaku.
It was the first time Chelsea have conceded more than one goal in a competition this season.
“It is impossible to make so many mistakes and hope for a result,” said Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel.
The defeat left Chelsea a one point lead at the top of the table over Manchester City, who will travel to Watford later on Saturday, and two points ahead of Liverpool who will travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
West Ham is fourth with 27 points, six points behind Chelsea.
