Sheikh Mansour “tried to buy Liverpool before owning Man City”
Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour was previously in talks to buy Premier League rivals Liverpool, but the move was blocked by Tom Hicks and George Gillett, said Graeme Souness.
The Citizens have grown steadily since Mansour started investing in the club with five Premier League titles, a world-class squad and an academy that is the envy of all clubs in Europe.
Over the past few seasons, the rivalry between Liverpool and Man City has grown exponentially, with both sides battling for the title – but things could have been a lot more different if Mansour had had his top pick.
Souness believes the move to Manchester hardly happened with then-Reds owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett blocking a takeover.
The Liverpool legend recalled speaking to Amanda Staveley, the financial adviser behind Mansour’s purchase of Man City, at a restaurant in Dubai.
âI went to Dubai 12, 13 years ago,â Souness recalled on Sky Sports, as reported by The Sun.
“I toured the hotel with my wife and son and went to the Nobu restaurant which was empty right after lunch.

âOn the way out someone came and introduced themselves, then a lady came and introduced herself as Amanda. ‘I’m a Liverpool fan,’ she said.
During the conversation she said, ‘I’m responsible for taking the family from Abu Dhabi to Man City’ and said, ‘But five minutes ago you said you were a supporter. from Liverpool – why didn’t you take them to Liverpool?
“She said, ‘I tried, and I tried, but Gillett and Hicks were so hard to deal with they ended up walking away.”
