Prom event for the Black Girls Don’t Get Love initiative
(WSYR-TV) — The Initiative, Black girls don’t get love is hosting its Prom event on July 23, 2022 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Syracuse. This is an official event to celebrate and recognize girls of color in the CNY community.
Black girls don’t get love works to address black mental health issues, which are often centered on black women. The term “strong black woman” has plagued society for decades and while this work has created a dialogue about race in America, the experiences of black girls have been largely ignored in the conversation.
Before the prom, the Black girls don’t get love the team organized a reading of the Black girls don’t get love book, so that the intention of the ball would be understood. Prom dresses were also given away at this reading, in partnership with Ninety-Two, to ensure that cost would not be an issue to attend the event. Ball attendees also had the chance to get a free dress at Becca’s Closet in Liverpool.
The ball is sponsored by the Gifford Foundation, the Allyn Foundation, Garam Group and Hueber-Breuer Construction. The PGR Foundation, Inc. will include a catered meal, live music, DJ, 360-degree photo booth, raffles, games, and more.
Black girls don’t get love says it’s not just a book or prom event, but a first step in building a global initiative to discuss the importance of black girls’ experiences in society.
