Pep Guardiola backs Jack Grealish to start scoring for Man City despite slow start since £ 100million transfer | Football news
Pep Guardiola is convinced the goals will start pouring in for Jack Grealish at Manchester City soon.
The signing of the champions’ UK record £ 100million has only scored two goals since his summer transfer from Aston Villa.
The 26-year-old’s frustration has escalated as he missed an incredible chance in Saturday’s relentless Premier League win over Wolves, but Guardiola has no doubts he will keep his promises.
The city manager said: “He has to do exactly what he does, no more than that. The rest will come.
“He’s likely to score two or three goals in every game and one day he will. He could have scored a hat-trick against Watford and in the last game a goal or two again.
“The way he’s playing is good but when you play against a fantastic team like Wolves, who are incredibly well organized defensively, it’s a nice compliment to them that breaking their structure is so complicated. It was difficult. for all players, not just Jack.
“Never in my career have I found a season where every player stays, from start to finish, in great shape. There are ups and downs.
“But he doesn’t have to score. What he has to do is play like he knows what to do, feel that his contribution helps to win games and the rest will come.”
City are back in action as they host Leeds on Tuesday night. Marcelo Bielsa’s side took four points from City last season and Guardiola is expecting another tough night.
He said: “Leeds are one of our toughest opponents. They play in a special and unique way and we only play against this special and unique way twice a year.
“We have to adjust some things because it’s different from other opponents. We’re not very used to these kinds of games.
“There isn’t a single game where they don’t create more chances than the opponents. It’s the type of game where we know we will have to suffer. We have to try to adapt and impose what we do. we want to do. “
Guardiola, meanwhile, urged his players and staff to ensure they receive their coronavirus vaccination booster as soon as they become eligible.
Covid-19 restrictions were tightened in England last week in response to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.
When asked if the staff needed to be beefed up, Guardiola said at a press conference: “Absolutely. Doctors suggest they need to do it.
“Most of us already have it. The players, for their age, by the time they have to do it, everyone’s going to decide and they are going to do it.”
Tottenham have had two games canceled following a Covid-19 outbreak at the club while Leicester, Norwich and Manchester United have also reported positive cases.
Guardiola, who lost her mother to the virus last year, said: “I’m worried – not because we’re going to cancel or break the league, but because in society the virus is there and people are suffering. .
“Some people, the staff here, have it right now and we spoke with the players almost every day and told them to be careful – stay safe, stay healthy, (wear) masks, social distancing .
“Now at Christmas there is a tendency to have parties, to go out, to do something more. This is normal but unfortunately the virus is still there.
“Of course I am worried, society is still suffering and cases are increasing day by day. So be careful.”
CL’s new draw pits Man Utd against Atleti; The city becomes sporty
A new Champions League round of 16 draw has pitted Manchester United against Atletico Madrid, while Manchester City face Sporting Lisbon.
A surprise turn of events saw the initial draw for the round of 16 canceled after what UEFA called a “technical error” involving Atletico Madrid, Liverpool and United.
The new draw came three hours later, and Liverpool now face Serie A champions Inter Milan, while Chelsea drew against Ligue 1 winners Lille, which has also been the case. during the first draw.
United seemed to have been offered the biggest reprieve after drawing with Paris Saint-Germain in the initial draw, but a first meeting with Atletico in European competition since 1991 will always be a severe test.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid will perhaps feel the most aggrieved by the mistake – they were drawn against Benfica in the morning but will now face PSG instead.
Elsewhere, Liverpool’s reward for becoming the first English team to win all six of the Champions League group matches is a tie with Inter, who won Serie A last season and currently top the table after 17 matches.
It was a case of deja vu for defending champions Chelsea, who were drawn against Lille in both the original and rescheduled draw.
City, finalists losing last season, face Sporting for the first time since the two sides met in the Europa League nine years ago.
