Liverpool suffer late blow against Newcastle United
Liverpool missed the opportunity to momentarily make the top four as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle United in the Premier League early kick-off on Saturday.
The Reds got off to a dream start at Anfield as Mohamed Salah shot them just three minutes into the game after taking advantage of a poor defense from Newcastle United.
Despite creating the most chances and dominating the game, Liverpool failed to extend their lead and it proved to be very costly in the later stages of the game.
Callum Wilson believed he saved a point for Newcastle in the stoppage time, but his efforts were marked after a lengthy VAR review.
After reviewing the situation, the referee announced that Newcastle United’s goal was called off due to a previous foul.
However, there was even more drama to come as Joe Willock pulled the equalizer for Newcastle deep into the save after Dwight Gayle directed the ball to him.
The late goal dealt Liverpool a heavy blow as they now remain in sixth with the lone point they could get in Saturday’s game.
As for Newcastle, they are gradually progressing towards safety as they are now nine points above the drop zone with five games to go.
