Cast announced for Malorie Blackman’s NOUGHTS & CROSSES tour
Pilot Theater has announced the full cast for its upcoming production run of Sabrina Mahfouz’s adaptation of Malorie Blackman’s critically acclaimed young adult novel about first love in a dangerous fictional dystopia – Noughts & Crosses.
The exciting cast of Noughts & Crosses will be led by Effie Ansah (The Maladies, Almeida Theatre) and James Arden in their first lead roles as Sephy and Callum; Emma Keele (East is East, Birmingham Rep and National Theater and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, UK Tour) as Meggie; Nathanial McClosky (Macbeth, Box Clever Theatre) as Jude; Amie Buhari (Flowers, Channel 4) as Jasmine; Steph Asamoah (Billy Eliot, Curve Theatre) as Minerva; Chris Jack (Brighton Rock, Pilot Theater and York Theater Royal and Our Town, Royal Exchange Manchester) as Kamal, Daniel Copeland (Invincible, Orange Tree Theater and The Jungle Book, Leeds Playhouse) as Ryan and the new came Tom Coleman in Naught Man, Andrew Dorn and understudy in Callum and Jude. Daniel Norford (Small Island and The Welkin, National Theater and The Lion King, UK Tour) will join the cast in the spring as Kamal. All the actors will also play ensemble roles.
Sephy is a Cross and Callum is a Void. Between the zeros and the crosses, there are racial and social divisions. A segregated society teeters on the razor’s edge.
As violence erupts, Sephy and Callum grow closer, but it’s a romance that will lead them into terrible danger.
Told from the perspective of two teenagers, Noughts & Crosses is a gripping love story set in an unstable and racially segregated society and explores powerful themes of love, revolution and what it means to grow up in a divided world.
Noughts & Crosses first toured in 2019 as the first co-production between Pilot Theatre, Derby Theatre, Belgrade Theater Coventry, Mercury Theatre, Colchester and York Theater Royal who in 2018 formed a new partnership to develop, produce and present theater for younger audiences. . The Pilot Theater production was seen by more than 30,000 people on tour, 40% of the audience being under the age of twenty. It went on to win the Pilot Theater the Excellence in Touring Award at the 2019 UK Theater Awards.
Directed by Pilot Theater Artistic Director Esther Richardson, Noughts & Crosses will open at the York Theater Royal from September 16-24 and then tour London’s Richmond Theater (September 27-October 1); Exeter Northcott (October 4-8); Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford (11-15 October); Northern Stage, Newcastle (18 – 22 October); Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield (1-5 November); New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich (8-12 November); The Alexandra Birmingham (15-19 November) Liverpool Playhouse (22-26 November); The Lowry, Salford (17-21 January 2023), Belgrade Theater Coventry (24-28 January); Rose Theatre, Kingston (January 31-February 11); Theater Royal Brighton (21-25 February); Oldham Coliseum (March 14-18); Poole Lighthouse (21-25 March) and Curve Theatre, Leicester (28 March-1 April)
